Tribute to those who persevere in 35℃+ heat | The 'conductors' on the ground under the scorching sun, walking 20,000+ steps a day

Salute to the Perseverance in 35℃+ Heat | The Ground "Conductor" Under the Scorching Sun, Walking 20,000+ Steps Daily

“Hoist one gear”, “Swing the boom to the left”… At 10 am, on the construction site of plot 23036, section 2, Jiangsu Qi'an Construction Group Co., Ltd., the towering cranes were slowly swaying. Gao Jianhong, squinting and tilting her head, watched them closely, issuing instructions through the walkie-talkie as needed. Under the scorching sun, Gao Jianhong's dark blue work vest was already soaked with sweat, but she dared not rest. As a crane signal worker, she is the crane operator's "second pair of eyes", and must always prioritize safety in production.

55-year-old Gao Jianhong has been in this line of work for 8 years. As a special operations worker, she is rigorous and meticulous in her work, earning the trust and respect of her colleagues. "In this industry, the most repeated words are ‘lower the hook’ and ‘hoist’, hundreds of times a day." Under Gao Jianhong's direction, the huge crane precisely and steadily lifted a bundle of steel bars to the high-altitude construction area. "The crane operator is high up and cannot see the ground clearly, relying entirely on the crane signal worker's instructions. So, one cannot be careless; precise instructions are essential—it's a matter of life and death." Gao Jianhong said as she checked the next batch of building materials to be hoisted. "Before hoisting, we must check if the load is overweight, if the binding is secure, and if the center of gravity is accurate. Only after confirming everything can the dispatch signal be given."
While directing the crane, Gao Jianhong's expression is exceptionally serious. She walks around, looking up constantly to confirm the exact position of the crane hook, while also observing the surroundings of the hoisting operation site, holding the walkie-talkie tightly, ready to issue instructions at any moment. "I also have to take care of safety during hoisting operations; safety must come first." As she spoke, a worker entered the crane's operating range, and Gao Jianhong immediately shouted at him to leave.

Day after day, directing the crane with her face upwards, Gao Jianhong's face and neck have been tanned dark red. During crane operations, Gao Jianhong has to follow the crane hook's movement; wherever the hook is, she has to move there. She walks more than 20,000 steps on the construction site every day. By the end of the day, her clothes are soaked with sweat, and her throat is hoarse. "Besides my own water, I drink seven or eight bottles of water provided on the site every day." After another bundle of building materials was hoisted, Gao Jianhong wiped the sweat from her forehead and gulped down a large bottle of water. "To help everyone beat the heat, the construction site provides mineral water, salty soda water, and other heatstroke prevention items." Gao Jianhong said that with the arrival of hot weather, the construction site's working hours have been adjusted: starting at 5 am, resting at 10 am, starting again at 3 pm, and finishing at 6 pm, avoiding the hottest hours.

At 10 am, workers began to take a break from the heat, but Gao Jianhong stayed until the very end. After confirming that the crane operation was finished, she coordinated the hoisting time for the afternoon and made preparations in advance. "I really enjoy this job. Through this work, I have also participated in the construction and development of Qidong over these years, and it gives me a great sense of accomplishment. It's worth it, no matter how hard it is."
